Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, helps protect individuals from high out-of-pocket costs not covered by Medicare. More than 13 million Americans currently have a Medigap plan. If you plan to supplement Medicare with a Medigap plan when you turn 65 too, there are some big changes you need to know.
For those eligible for Medicare on or after Jan. 1, 2020, Medigap plans can no longer provide first-dollar coverage of the Medicare Part B deductible. This means that for newly-eligible Medicare beneficiaries, Plans C and F that traditionally cover 100 percent of the Part B deductible will not be options, and you'll have eight plans to choose from (instead of 10). Those already enrolled in Plans C and F will not be affected and be grandfathered in with their existing plans.
