The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mailed their final round of new Medicare cards to all enrollees in April 2019, so by now you should have
received your new card with your new Medicare number. To help prevent identity theft and protect your benefits, CMS decided to remove Social Security Numbers from all Medicare cards and has given every Medicare enrollee a new unique Medicare number. This new number, called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), will replace your previous Medicare number, and you’ll use it exactly like you used your old number.
From now until the end of the year (Dec. 31), you can use both your old and new number, however on Jan. 1, 2020, your old number will no longer be valid.
If you haven’t already, please contact our team and all of your healthcare providers to make sure they have your new Medicare number, ensuring you don’t experience any disruption to your benefits.
